Tips for Your Next Audition
Let's be real...
Whether you're preparing for a dance convention, arts program, or a college audition, you must be prepared. Each audition you encounter will have different requirements, energy and expectations. We’ve created some pointers to help you prepare. Follow these tips to ensure a successful and stress-free experience.
Although you will most likely have time to warm up, be sure to do this beforehand. Do not show up to the audition cold! A proper warm up will allow you to safely perform any technical element, improvisation or trick necessary to stand out - and that is the goal!
Be open to the process. Even though you’ve been through many auditions, each one will be different. Go with the flow! You’re already out of your comfort zone so don’t restrict yourself.
Arrive Early. Sometimes the GPS or maps app can take you the long route. Parking can be tricky or elevators might be full - you certainly wouldn’t want to show up stressed and sweating! Giving yourself plenty of time to get there, and take few deep breaths before walking in.
Walk in with confidence. Shut that voice of doubt down and relax!
Be yourself. Everyone will be attracted to your true authentic and crazy self! :) More than likely, the moderators of the audition are looking for individuals. If they want you to blend in, they will tell you!
Breathe. Keep yourself calm and try your best not to let your nerves get the best of you. This new environment and can be a little intimidating. Don’t let it get to you. 20 refreshing and cleansing deep breaths can work wonders before going into an audition.
Look professional. Pull your hair back. Wear makeup and make sure your dance attire is comfortable yet flattering to your body.
If auditioning a solo, perfect it! For example, college solo auditions are generally 90 seconds long, however be sure to READ each college’s instructions, as this can change. This is your time to show your personality and strengths. Show off!
Bring ALL your shoes. Be prepared. You never know what you will be asked to do! If you’re “not good” at a particular element or subject, do the best you can and have a great attitude about it.
Try and try again! We suggest going to multiple auditions if you can – the more you practice, the better you will get!
Listen for corrections and apply them immediately. While teachers are looking for individuality, be sure to follow their instructions. They want to see how quickly you can adapt to their methods and style.
Last but not least, always be prepared to improv. Most auditions will ask you to do this. Don't overthink it - just dance your heart out!
Break a leg and have a great week!
